How to Invoice as a DJ or MC in Nigeria: Event Bookings, Deposits & VAT

The Nigerian entertainment scene—from massive "Detty December" concerts to corporate end-of-year parties and high-society weddings—is an incredibly lucrative market for talented DJs and MCs (Masters of Ceremony).

However, it is also an industry notorious for "audio money." Promoters promise massive payouts after the show, only to disappear into the crowd when it's time to settle the bill.

If you want to transition from a struggling upcoming act to a highly paid, respected professional, you must enforce strict financial boundaries. Your talent gets you the gig, but your invoice guarantees your payment.

1. The Golden Rule: The 70% Non-Refundable Booking Fee

Never, ever block off a weekend date based on a verbal promise or a WhatsApp voice note.

The entertainment industry operates on exclusivity. If a promoter books you for a Saturday night, you are physically unable to accept any other gig for that time slot. If the promoter cancels on Friday, you earn zero Naira for the entire weekend.

  • The Industry Standard: You must issue an invoice demanding a 50% to 70% Non-Refundable Booking Fee (Deposit). The date is not yours until the cash hits your account.
  • The Balance: The remaining balance must be stipulated on your invoice to be paid strictly 24 to 48 hours before you step on stage. Do not chase the event organizer for money while they are stressed managing a chaotic crowd.

2. Structuring Your Invoice Line Items

A professional booking invoice is not a single line that reads "DJ Services: ₦500k."

Promoters and corporate clients need to see exactly what they are paying for, especially if they are covering your logistics. Break out your value explicitly:

  • Primary Performance Fee: MC/Hosting duties for a 4-hour Corporate Gala (6 PM - 10 PM) — ₦400,000
  • Overtime Rate (The Essential Clause): Pre-agreed overtime rate of ₦50,000 per additional hour past 10 PM (Billed separately post-event).
  • Equipment Rental (If Applicable): 2x Pioneer CDJs, Mixer, and specialized lighting rig — ₦150,000
  • Logistics & Hospitality: Return Business Class Flights (Lagos - Abuja) and 2 Nights Hotel Accommodation (Pre-paid by Client) — ₦350,000
  • Total Booking Value: ₦900,000

3. The "Overtime Surcharge" Clause

Nigerian events almost never start on time. A "3-hour" gig scheduled for 2 PM often doesn't kick off until 5 PM.

If you do not clearly define your start and end times on your initial quote and invoice, the client will hold you hostage for 8 hours for the price of 3.

Include this note explicitly on your invoice terms: "This invoice covers a maximum 4-hour set, starting from the contracted arrival time of 2:00 PM. Any delays caused by the event organizers, or requests to perform beyond 6:00 PM, will incur a strict overtime surcharge of ₦50,000 per hour, payable immediately."

4. Taxes and Corporate Billing

When you are booked by a major brand (e.g., a telecom company launching a new product), you are not dealing with a casual promoter; you are dealing with a corporate procurement department.

  • They Need Your TIN: If you issue a Word Doc invoice without a Taxpayer Identification Number, their finance team will reject it.
  • Withholding Tax (WHT): Entertainment services provided to a corporate entity are subject to a 5% WHT deduction (if you operate as an individual/enterprise). Expect them to deduct this from your final balance and demand the FIRS credit note.
  • Value Added Tax (VAT): If your DJ/MC business is legally registered as a company and generates over ₦100 million annually, you are legally required to add 7.5% VAT to your performance fee.

Elevate Your Brand with Professional Invoicing

You invest heavily in your sound equipment, your wardrobe, and your public brand. Your administrative paperwork should reflect that same premium quality.

Stop sending amateur text messages to negotiate your fees. By generating your booking invoices via InvoiceGenerator.ng, you can create a permanent, legally binding PDF that explicitly states your non-refundable deposit terms, outlines your overtime clauses, and projects the image of an elite, top-tier entertainer who expects to be paid on time.
