What a professional receipt should include
Include:
- The word Receipt or Payment Receipt.
- A unique receipt number.
- The date payment was received.
- The seller's name and contact information.
- The customer's name.
- A description of the goods or services.
- The amount received and currency.
- The payment method.
- The related invoice number, where available.
- Whether the payment was full or partial.

How to number receipts
Use a simple sequence such as REC-2026-0001, REC-2026-0002 and REC-2026-0003. Do not reuse the same number for different transactions. If a receipt is cancelled, keep a record rather than silently assigning the number to another payment.
Partial-payment receipt example
If a customer pays ₦100,000 against a ₦250,000 invoice, the receipt should say:
- Amount received: ₦100,000
- Related invoice: INV-2026-0184
- Remaining balance: ₦150,000
- Status: Part payment
This prevents the customer from treating a partial-payment receipt as proof that the full invoice was settled.
