Nigeria VAT Number Example: How to Find and Verify Your Tax ID

If a customer asks for your VAT number, they usually want the tax identifier connected to your business. In Nigeria, this is commonly shown as your Tax Identification Number, also called a TIN or Tax ID.

The wording can be confusing because people may say VAT number, FIRS number, TIN or Tax ID when referring to the identifier used for tax records. The safest approach is to copy the number exactly as it appears on your official tax profile or registration document.

What does a Nigerian VAT number look like?

Here is a fictional example for illustration:

Tax ID: 12345678-0001

Do not use that example to judge whether another number is valid. Number formats and the way they appear on documents can change. Always confirm a real identifier through an official tax channel.

Where can you find your Tax ID?

Check the following places:

  1. Your tax registration or taxpayer profile document.
  2. Your business record on the official Tax ID portal.
  3. Previous tax returns, payment receipts or tax correspondence.
  4. Your TaxPro Max account, if your business is enrolled.
  5. Documents supplied by your accountant or tax adviser.

The Joint Revenue Board provides Tax ID services for individuals and organisations. Its official procedure explains that eligible taxpayers can retrieve their identifier through the Tax ID portal using the appropriate personal or business information.

How to retrieve or verify your Tax ID

For a registered business

Have your CAC registration details ready. Search using the official business information and confirm that the name returned matches your registered name.

For an individual

The official retrieval process may use an identity source such as an NIN or BVN. Enter information only on an official government website and check the web address before submitting personal details.

If the record cannot be found

First check for spelling mistakes and confirm that you selected the correct taxpayer type. If the problem continues, contact the relevant tax authority or ask a qualified tax professional to help reconcile the record.

Is a Tax ID the same as a VAT certificate?

No. A Tax ID identifies the taxpayer. A registration certificate or portal record confirms a registration status. One document may display the Tax ID, but the number and the certificate are not the same thing.

Read our VAT registration guide if you still need to register or obtain the relevant registration record.

Where should the number appear on an invoice?

Place the Tax ID in the supplier details section, close to the business name and address. Label it clearly as TIN, Tax ID or the label used on your official record.

Example:

Business nameChidi Consulting Limited
Address14 Marina Road, Lagos
Tax ID12345678-0001

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my CAC number as my VAT number?

Do not assume they are interchangeable. Use the Tax ID shown on the official taxpayer record.

Should a small business put its Tax ID on every invoice?

If your business has an official Tax ID, showing it consistently makes the invoice easier for customers and finance teams to process. Ask a tax professional about any requirement specific to your business.

Can a customer verify my Tax ID?

Verification options depend on the official service available and the information the customer is authorised to check. Never send passwords or private portal credentials to a customer.
