VAT Registration Certificate Nigeria: How to Download and Verify It

Customers, banks and procurement teams sometimes ask a business for its “VAT certificate”. That phrase can mean different things.

They may want proof that the business is registered for VAT. They may be asking for the business Tax ID. In some cases, they actually want a Tax Clearance Certificate, which is a different document.

Before sending anything, ask what the organisation needs and why it needs it.

What is a VAT registration certificate?

A VAT registration record is evidence that a taxpayer has been registered for VAT. The exact name and download option shown in a government portal can change as tax systems are updated.

The current NRS Taxpayer Self-Service Portal provides access to services such as taxpayer profiles, tax filing, payments, e-invoicing and Tax Clearance. New taxpayers can begin through the portal's registration page.

If you registered through an older FIRS system, your record may have a different heading or layout. Keep the original document, but confirm that the taxpayer details remain correct in the current NRS system.

VAT certificate, Tax ID and TCC are not the same

Here is the simplest way to separate them:

RecordWhat it shows
Tax IDThe unique number used to identify the taxpayer
VAT registration recordEvidence of registration for VAT
Tax Clearance CertificateEvidence relating to tax compliance for the covered period

The official Nigerian Tax ID portal explains that the Tax ID is jointly issued by the Nigeria Revenue Service and Joint Revenue Board for tax administration and identification.

A Tax ID may appear on a VAT registration document, but the number is not the same thing as the document.

How to find your registration record

1. Sign in through the official NRS portal

Use the official NRS website or a verified government link. Avoid entering tax credentials on a link received from an unknown WhatsApp account or email.

2. Check your taxpayer profile

Confirm the registered business name, Tax ID, address and tax obligations. If VAT appears as an active obligation, save a copy or screenshot of the relevant record if the portal allows it.

3. Check the document or certificate area

Portal wording can change. Look for registration documents, acknowledgements, taxpayer profile records or certificate downloads.

4. Use NRS support if the record is missing

The NRS Support Portal includes VAT Filing and Tax ID help. Raise a ticket if your registration is complete but the expected record is not available.

What information should you check?

Before sharing the document, verify:

  • Registered business name
  • Tax ID
  • CAC registration number, where shown
  • Business address
  • VAT status or obligation
  • Registration date
  • Branch details, if the business operates multiple tax profiles

If the name on the document differs from the current CAC name, resolve the difference rather than editing the certificate yourself.

How to verify a Tax ID

Use the official NRS TIN verification service. It supports searches using a TIN, registration number or phone number.

Read our Nigeria VAT number guide for examples and retrieval steps.

What should appear on your invoice?

Use the Tax ID shown on the official taxpayer record. Place it with the supplier details and keep the formatting consistent across invoices.

If you charge VAT, show the taxable subtotal, VAT rate, VAT amount and final total separately. Our VAT invoice format guide shows a practical layout.

You can also create a VAT-ready invoice and use the VAT calculator to check your numbers.

Common problems

The portal does not recognise the business

Check the CAC number, registered name and account type. A spelling difference or an old company record may prevent a match.

The Tax ID on an old document looks different

Do not change the number manually. Retrieve or verify the current Tax ID through the official portal and raise a support request if the records conflict.

A customer asks for login details

Never share your NRS password or one-time code. Send the requested document or publicly verifiable information only.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download a VAT certificate without registering?

No. The business must first have a valid taxpayer record and the relevant tax obligation.

Is a VAT certificate the same as a Tax Clearance Certificate?

No. They serve different purposes. Confirm which document the requesting organisation needs.

Can I use my CAC number as my Tax ID?

Do not assume the numbers are interchangeable. Retrieve the official Tax ID linked to the business record.
